In the Spotlight: Table conversations in BLEND
Read about the experiences of Hans and Carolien and their missionary venture in one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods of Rotterdam.
In recent weeks, Hans and Carolien have started 'table talks' in their missionary enterprise BLEND Bloemhof in Rotterdam South. They write about this:
“Last year we did an Alpha course with local residents, but that turned out to be a step too far for a number of people. In addition, there was a lot of turnover, because people only came a few times or joined later. The table discussions that we have started to organize are more in line with the people who come to us in BLEND.
We start on Sunday evening with a potluck: everyone brings something for the meal. Then we listen to a story from the Gospel of John and we share a story from current events that connects to it. Then we split up into small groups and continue to talk about the theme and finally conclude centrally with feedback and prayer.
It is special to see how easily people enter. It is often young people and there are many spiritual seekers. One story is particularly inspiring. A young woman came into BLEND. She started participating in the Alpha course and then regularly came across the floor with all kinds of questions about faith. It is partly because of her that we started the table discussions. She is always there. She reads from the bible, came up with books by C.S. Lewis and always asks personal questions. The other day the Lord told us to ask her not to surrender to Him. When she came back to BLEND she told me with a big smile… that she had surrendered to the Lord that day before! How special. And now we can walk with her a bit in life with Jesus!”
